Play Therapy in Out of Home Care

Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. Dr Seuss

 Course overview:

In this one day workshop we will discuss the unique experiences of children and adolescents in out-of-home-care.  We will examine separation and loss, grief, trauma, attachment and transracial issues.  Using a Theraplay® model, you will have a chance to experience playful activities from each of the four dimensions of Structure, Engagement, Nurture and Challenge. Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement using play. We will also use art to explore and enhance attachment and positive self-identity.

This training will provide you with greater understanding of and appreciation for the unique experience that children and young people in out-of-home-care face. You will be introduced to play-based attachment interventions from a Theraplay® model and have the chance to participate in hands-on playful activities.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand ambiguous loss and describe how children in out-of-home-care experience this kind of loss
  • Consider Developmental Trauma Disorder and how this diagnosis may present itself in children in out-of-home-care
  • Participate in at least two attachment focused interventions
  • Practice at least two ways to support a discussion on racial identity
  • Identify the four dimensions of Theraplay®
  • Learn at least 3 activities for each of the Theraplay® dimensions

What ideas will be explored:

  • What are the unique experiences of children in out-of-home-care?
  • What is Theraplay® and how can it be useful in working with children in out-of-home-care?
  • How can we help to build and strengthen relationships between children in out-of-home-care and their carers?
  • What play based activities are best suited to children who are not living with their birth parents?

Training methods will include:

  • Interactive presentations
  • Large group discussions
  • Pair and small group discussions
  • Practical role play experience utilising art and play based interventions
  • Reflection opportunities for application of methods
  • Learn in the safety and support of a small group
