Masterclass overview 

This 3 hour introductory masterclass offers a focused overview of Filial Therapy within the Child Centred Play Therapy modality. Designed as a condensed learning experience, it introduces the theoretical foundations, development, and research base of Filial Family Therapy, alongside its place within the broader continuum of therapeutic work with children.

Participants will explore the five core goals of Filial Therapy, the stages of the process, and key considerations for inclusion and exclusion of both children and parents. The session will also introduce the therapist’s role as educator, trainer and group facilitator, with attention to the teaching paradigm and foundational play therapy skills. Through a combination of teaching, discussion, video material and demonstration, participants will gain introductory exposure to the model and practical clinical insights to support reflection and application in their own work.

You will have the opportunity to: 

 • List the five major therapeutic goals of Filial Family Therapy
 • Describe inclusionary and exclusionary criteria relating to children in Filial Therapy
 • Describe inclusionary and exclusionary criteria relating to parents in Filial Therapy
 • Identify at least two benefits of Filial Therapy compared to individual play therapy
 • List the key underlying principles and attitudes required for training parents in Filial Therapy
 • Describe the therapist’s role as educator, trainer, and group facilitator
 • Recognise the stages and structure of the Filial Therapy process at an introductory level

Workshop Facilitator -  Helen Younan Barrett
		Helen Younan Barrett is a Systemic Play Therapist and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 20 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, and families. She is certified in Child Centred Play Therapy and Filial Therapy through the National Institute of Relationship Enhancement, and has further training in Synergetic Play Therapy, Interplay Family Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Family Constellations.   Helen is the founder and director of The Family Systems Hub, where she provides child and family psychotherapy, parent support, and clinical supervision. She also facilitates play therapy informed workshops and delivers Filial Therapy training and other systemic based training in Australia.   Her work is centred on strengthening children and parents impacted by trauma and adversity, with a strong emphasis on resourcing parents through systemic and relational approaches to support sustainable and long term change within the family system.
