Course Overview:

This half-day, live online training introduces you to the uses of puppets for counselling work with children.

Puppets are part of the magic of childhood. In therapy with children, puppets can be used by the child as a safe, projective way to explore feelings and issues, thereby reducing symptoms and enacting various ways so solve problems. Therapy with puppets is particularly effective for those working with young or traumatized children who may not respond to traditional approaches. It has also been found to be effective in telemental health sessions (online sessions).

In this three-hour presentation, you will be able to review the history of puppets in therapy, learn ways to select puppets for specific play therapy activities, and explore interventions to facilitate the therapeutic powers of play. This will be an interactive workshop in which participants will make a puppet for use in therapeutic contexts, as well as practice experiential play therapy activities using their puppets. Supplies can be gathered from the office or even at home.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • State 2 or more rationales for the introduction of therapeutic puppetry in the history of child counselling.

  • Identify 2 or more therapeutic powers of play facilitated by puppets in play therapy.

  • Demonstrate 3 or more specific therapeutic applications of puppets in child counselling.

  • Apply 2 or more methods for creating therapeutic puppets for use in child counselling.

  • Describe 2 or more therapeutic puppetry interventions to reduce symptoms and explore feelings in child counselling.
