Course Description

3 hour live, online course

In this workshop, we will focus on how to think about, structure, and run counseling groups for children and adolescents. Peter will bring his experience leading hundreds of groups for youth between the ages of 10 - 13 years old. He will also be sharing aspects of a curriculum he has developed with a colleague entitled "Belong and Be You" (in press, Routledge). Additionally, you can see how this curriculum links directly to what we know are the foundational developmental tasks of young adolescents. You will gain a better understanding of child development based on the latest brain research as well as a "hands on" understanding of how to best engage youth in groups: Enhancing their social connections with others while helping them be confidently unique as individuals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will have an opportunity to:

  • Deepen your understanding of how important group work is for children and adolescents
  • Gain understanding of how to design effective group work and how individual sessions link to the next
  • Learn specific strategies and activities for engaging youth in group work
  • Learn methods of effective group evaluation data to share with stakeholders
