Art and Play Therapy in person

Recent Feedback

Thank you so much for the course. It is one of the most practical and rewarding I have attended and I have attended a lot in my career. Highly relevant to counsellors and psychologists and allied health workers.

This workshop will help you expand your skills and give you the words to explain child play therapy to your colleagues and employers and parents.

It was an amazing learning experience! I have come away with specific strategies and increased confidence working with children.

Highly recommend to those hoping to understand play and art therapy and practice skills.

Enter into children's play and you will find the place where their minds, hearts, and souls meet.

Virginia Axline

Course overview:

This two day workshop provides a practical introduction to child-led art and play therapy. Toys are children's words and play is their language. To understand and help children, we need to allow children opportunities to express themselves in their own language through art and play. Based on the work of international play therapy centres, and the presenter's own twenty five years of clinical experience, this workshop will demonstrate and give you practice opportunities in child-led play therapy. Through training in expressive play methods using toys, puppets and art media, you will practise the necessary skills and gain an understanding about working therapeutically in both non-directive play therapy and directive art therapy with children. This introductory workshop provides practical, useful and interactive opportunities to start your work with children aged between 2-10. Relevant development principles and current evidence will also be reviewed. Consideration is given to the types of art and play media best suited to this age.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify the theory behind child-centred play therapy
  • Consider the evidence which shows this works
  • Build skills in communicating and contracting with parents
  • Practise person-centered empathic counselling skills
  • Learn child-led art and play therapy techniques
  • Consider practical ways to build your art and play therapy kit

Ideas explored:

  • What is the difference between play and play therapy?
  • How do I explain play therapy to parents?
  • How does it work as therapy?
  • Does the child need to engage me in play?
  • What do I tell parents about what has happened in a session?
  • What if the child doesn't want to play?
  • How do we know if this is working?
  • When might play therapy not be useful to a child?
  • What if the child wants to take toys home?
  • What toys/ resources do you need for play therapy?

Training methods will include:

  • Interactive presentations
  • Large group discussions
  • Pair and small group discussions
  • DVD and live demonstration of methods
  • Practical role play experiences with child-led methods in pairs
  • Reflection opportunities for application of methods

Who should attend?

What people are saying about ...

Art and Play Therapy with Children

The training workshop was..

.. the best one I've been to and I hope I will be able to attend another one in the near future.

.. a wonderful opportunity to increase my skills and learning in this area and I found it extremely useful with the information and training provided.

.. a great provision of practical examples and opportunities to give them a go

.. I wish I had learnt this earlier! It has changed the way I view my practice and would have been great to have done this at the start of my career.

.. I liked how interactive the training was and how it provided practical skills that can easily be incorporated into our work.

.. a valued chance to be taught the perspective of the child though role play and explanation.

.. great PD!

.. a great chance to learn theoretical underpinnings of play therapy, to reflect on myself and to practice skills and experience play therapy through role plays from the role of both child and counsellor.

.. an effective introduction to play therapy.

.. a really practical approach. So often we are taught the rationale behind why we use a particular technique and the hoped outcomes but not the practical how to exactly do it which we did here.

.. I liked the style and presentation of the material and I enjoyed the mix of lecture, interaction and collaboration over the two days.

Gains after training..

... I had used the child led play therapy with a 7 year old girl I was working with and by the end of the session she was comfortable enough to tell me information that I did not expect her to share with me. It  was really good to give it a go in an actual session and I saw how it helped the client to become more comfortable. I am looking forward to continue providing such therapy for children.

... I really enjoyed your workshop and have tried to practice with the sentiment of what you taught  me, which I feel is to have faith in the process and to really approach my clients with an open, accepting and encouraging view of who they are and the internal resources they have themselves to draw on if I can create that comfortable safe space for them to do so.
