Creative Arts Supervision: Innovative Process Work to Enable, Expand and Energise Work Practice

Course Overview:

Learn new ways to be a supervisor and supervisee to enhance your practice.

Traditionally, supervision practice for education, health and social care professions is framed by three different models: psychotherapy-based; developmental and social role. Alongside these models, creative approaches and expressive arts methods in supervision can provide alternative means of exploring the dynamics of professional practice. Engaging in a non-talking process during supervision can create a shift or a new awareness behind a work-related issue. These approaches can be used to validate and enhance a supervisee’s experience and promote a different understanding of reflexive practice.

Our innovative workshop will introduce participants to the role and use of creative arts supervision approaches. There are no levels of creative skill or ability required by participants in order to experience the benefits of this supervisory approach.

This workshop will

  • Present the evidence for and benefits of expressive arts supervision approaches informed by a co-constructive paradigm
  • Provide participants with an opportunity to explore experientially some of the issues they bring to supervision through a representation in one or a variety of creative mediums, and
  • Invite participants to reflect on the creative representations of their supervision experience and explore understandings on the phenomena that may impact work practice

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn the philosophical underpinnings supporting non-verbal approaches in supervision to provide opportunities for different insights on professional and personal development
  • Explore supervision issues using creative mediums such as music improvisation and the expressive arts
  • Experience a supervision approach that uses a variety of creative arts modalities in its search for meaning making
  • Reflect on creative representation and explore understandings on the phenomena that arise during individual and group supervision processes
  • Enhance your insights into professional practice and personal wellbeing
  • Be introduced to multimodal explorations that bypass the well-known narratives usually framing supervision practice and delve into new and sometimes surprising findings
  • Explore creative ways of sharing, through verbal and non-verbal means, individually, in dyads, small groups and the larger group, identifying the differences of each mode of sharing
  • Explore practical ways of taking new findings into your supervisory practice.

What ideas are explored:

  • How does my past experience and values affect the way I am in supervision (as a supervisor or supervisee)?
  • What is the value of incorporating a multimodal approach to supervision?
  • How do I introduce the use of creative supervision tools in my supervision practice?
  • What do I do after the supervisee has created a representation?
  • How to be with someone else’s representation while bracketing out our own assumptions and interpretations?
  • How do I assist in making meaning of the representation?
  • Are creative arts therapy techniques suitable for individual and/or group supervision work?
  • How can I integrate both traditional (verbal) and creative supervision (non-verbal) processes in my practice?
  • As a supervisor/supervisee do I need to have solid creative skills in order to engage effectively with creative supervision tools?
  • What is the difference between using creative tools in supervision and this creative supervision approach?

Training methods will include:

  • Interactive presentations
  • Large group discussions
  • Pair and small group discussions
  • Live demonstrations of methods
  • Practical experience with creative tools including music improvisation
  • Multimodal reflection opportunities for application of methods
  • Learn in the safety and support of a small group.
